Description
This is a photo of the front end of a 1901 Porter Locomotive Work steam locomotive that I worked on the restoration of. It's owned by Ollie Johnston, one of the original 9 animators that worked for Walt Disney. Now in his ninties a friend of his pulled some major strings, saved the rusting #3 from a field, had it restored.
This photo was taken the morning of May 10th, 2005 at the Disneyland roundhouse where the locomtive had been secretly transported in the middle of the night. Moments after this photo was taken the locmoitve was driven around to New Orleans station where an unsuspecting Ollie was reciving an award for his help in the original design of Disneyland. Ollie cried when he saw the engine pull up to the station, "I don't believe it. It's my baby."
Ollie was the first non-Disney engineer to drive the first non-Disney engine around Disneland. A feat that will probably never be repeated.
